Marzo è decisamente il mio mese delle disillusioni. Il mago è il primo libro della serie di Terramare. Ursula Le Guin è decisamente nota per i suoi romanzi di fantascienza, ma questo è lodato da tutti e considerato un capolavoro. E a me non è piaciuto. Ged, anche chiamato Sparviere, è nato e cresciuto in una delle molte isole che compongono Terramare, Gond. Da bambino dimostra di avere poteri magici e la zia, che è la strega locale, inizia la sua educazione magica. Quando l'isola viene attaccata dai predoni Krag, riesce a utilizzare i suoi poteri per nascondere il suo villaggio dietro una nebbia magica. Questa impresa giunge all'orecchio di un saggio mago che si reca al villaggio di Ged per prenderlo come apprendista. Ma Ged è inquieto e dopo uno spaventoso incidente, il mago gli offre due scelte: rimanere con lui, oppure andare alla scuola per maghi di Roke. Ged sceglie la seconda e parte per l'isola di Roke.

Avrei dovuto sapere che questo libro non era adatto a me: non mi piace molto il fantasy classico (a parte Tolkien), semplicemente non mi ispira. Inoltre, lo stile di scrittura è un po' sorpassato, cosa non strana visto che il romanzo è stato pubblicato nel 1968. Quello che è strano è che normalmente non è un problema, ma in questo caso mi ha impedito di sentire la storia (ho trovato anche noiosissime le lunghissime descrizioni). La cosa peggiore, però, è stata il protagonista. Impossibile farmi piacere Ged. E' così sospettoso e pronto a cercare della malizia nel comportamento o nelle parole di qualsiasi persona. Non c'è nessuna ragione particolare per questo nel suo passato, per cui devo dedurne che è proprio un suo difetto caratteriale. I suoi problemi con Jasper probabilmente sono causati proprio dal suo atteggiamento arrogante. Le relazioni tra i personaggi comunque non sono per nulla sviluppate (ci viene semplicemente detto che fra Ged e Jasper non corre buon sangue, o che Ged e Vecht sono amici e dobbiamo prenderlo per vero) e i personaggi stessi sono poco elaborati. Il romanzo è formulaico sia nella trama che nella caratterizzazione.

La principale assunzione nel mondo fantastico della Le Guin è che gli esseri umani e le cose hanno nomi da utilizzare tutti i giorni e nomi "veri". I nomi veri normalmente vengono tenuti segreti perchè la loro conoscenza regala un grande potere. Questo è molto interessante ma nel romanzo sembra che serva solo come un deus ex machina. Sto pensando in particolare all'episodio del drago. Inoltre, ci sono molti particolari che vengono sottolineati in modo eccessivo (il rapporto di Ged con l'otak o l'identità della Principessa) che poi in realtà non hanno un ruolo significativo nella trama, cosa sia fastidiosa che frustrante.

Per quanto riguarda la morale della storia, io l'ho apprezzata ma dubito che lo stesso Ged l'abbia imparata. Non mi sembra affatto pentito. Inizialmente crea un sacco di guai a causa della sua arroganza, del suo orgoglio e della sua ambizione. Poi fa la cosa giusta ma solo per paura ed egoismo, non perchè abbia veramente capito il significato di una cosa giusta. Non c'è un vero cambiamento nel personaggio principale. La sola cosa interessante in questo libro è l'interpretazione psicologica del sé (non posso dire di più) non che sia giunta come una sorpresa.

March seems to be a month of disenchantments. A Wizard of Earthsea is the first book of the Earthsea series. Ursula Le Guin is well-know for her science fiction but this classic fantasy novel is widely praised as a masterpiece. And I did not like it. Ged, also called Sparrowhawk, was born and bread in one of the may island of Earthsea, Gond. As a boy he proves to have magic powers and his aunt, the village witch, begins his magic education. When the island is attacked from Karg raiders, he succeeds in using his powers to conceal his village behind a magic fog. This entrerprise reaches the ears of a wise wizard who comes to Ged's village to take him as an apprentice. But Ged is restless and after a very scaring experience the wizard gives him to choices: to stay with him or to go the Roke school for wizards. Ged chooses the second one and leaves for the island of Roke.

I should have known this one was not for me: I don't really like classic fantasy fiction (apart for Tolkien), it is just not appealing for me. Then, I found the language and narration somewhat stale, which is not strange since the novel was published in 1968. What is strange is that this is not usually a problem, but in this case it made me feel detached from the story and the endless descriptions were boring. What I really found awful, though, is the protagonist. Ged is really unlikable. He is so suspicious and always looking for malice in what the other people do or say. There is no reason in his past for this kind of behaviour so I have to deduce it is just a character flaw. His problems with Jasper are probably caused by Ged's arrogant stance. The relationship between the characters are not developed (we are only told Ged and Jasper are not in good terms and that Ged and Vetch are friends and we must accept it as true) and all characters are poorly drawn. The novel is formulaic both in plot and in characterization.

The main assumption in Le Guin's fantastic world is that human beings and things have everyday names and "true" names. True names are usually kept secret because their knowledge is a source of great power. This is really interesting but in the novel it seems to work as a deus ex machina. I am thinking about the dragon's episode, for instance. Moreover, there are many things in the novel which are excessively highlighted (such as Ged's relationship with the otak, or the identity of the Princess) without having any meaningful role in the story, and this is annoying and frustrating.

As for the moral of the story, I appreciated it but I don't think Ged himself had learned it. He does not look repentant to me. At first he causes a lot of trouble because of his hubris, pride and ambition, and then he does the right thing just out of fear and selfishness, not because he has really understood the meaning of living a righteous life. There is no real change in the main character. The only interesting feature of this book was the psychological reading of the self (I can't say more) even if it came as no surprise to me.
